Moving a Document Library from an Area to a SubArea in 2003 Portal - And retaining the custom f

Asked By: Aiesha    Date: Mar 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 980

I am moving a document library from an Area in Sharepoint Portal 2003 to
a SubArea. I tried to do this by coping and pasting the document library
through Explorer. But when I open and work with the documents, the
custom fields and views I created in the original document library did
not come over to the new area.

Is there an easier way of moving this to the correct area and retaining
the custom fields/views that I set up? I am specifically concerned about
having to re-key all the data that was entered in the custom fields.

Have you considered saving the doc library  as a template and including
the content? I think there's a size limit but it could give you
a .stp file that will have all your docs and your metadata.

In Sharepoint 2003 there is silly hard-coded limitation while you wish to
save site as template include the content. The template is limited to
10MB!!!
In MOSS 2007 you can change that limit using stsadm execute the following
command :

stsadm -o setproperty -pn max-template-document-size -pv 40000000
(where max-template-document-size is in Bytes)

Unfortunately, this is a huge document
library with over 150 files. I found a tool called SMove, but the
trial version of it I can unable to get it work. I have several
document libraries to move, and we store a significant amount of
metadata with the documents.
