Move Discussion List Items

Asked By: Britney    Date: Feb 04    Category: MOSS    Views: 13493

I have a general Discussion Board (MOSS 2007) with about 85 items. I need to
create another discussion board for specialized topics, but approximately 20
items in the general board fall into the specialized topic. So I need to move
those 20+ items from the general board to the specialized board. Any thoughts on
how to do this?

I cannot seem to find a way to do it. I have tried the Site Content and
Structure feature, but the Copy & Move menu options are not enabled. I have
moved document library items using the Site Content and Structure feature, and I
do have full control over the discussion board, but no luck.

Use a SharePoint Designer workflow. The only action you need is a 'Copy items  to
Another List'. Make it manual and kick it off on the items you want to move.

The problem with discussion  boards is that whatever "Available" technique you
use, you will not be able to retain fields like Created By and Modified by,
which to me is important as one really wants to know who responded to which

Another technique but with the above problem is if you are using Outlook 2007.
Connect the discussion lists to Outlook. Just move  the posts from general  lists
in specialized topics in Outlook folders and Outlook will take care of the rest.

I have found an answer that works for my needs. Using MS Outlook, I am able to
move list  items from one Discussion board  to another.

In SharePoint:
- in both the general  and specialized topic Discussion Boards, select "Connect
to Outlook" from the "Actions" menu

In MS Outlook
- navigate to the source Discussion Board in the "SharePoint Lists" folder
- select the list item(s) to move
- select Edit > move  to Folder...
- navigate to the destination Discussion board

MS Outlook takes care of moving the list item(s) in SP

I am the site owner of a site in Sharepoint 2003. We wanted to re-organize our discussions. For that using Outlook 2007, I followed the instructions on answer #3.

All seemed OK. I managed to connect to the discussion  boards and move  the items  from one board  to the other. But when I checked on the site, the items were still in the original location.

Then I realized that I had read access to the lists. So, the changes were done on my offline version.

Anyone has any tips?
