MOSS User Profiles Vs Custom UserProfileDB

our design team is having questions about
how using MOSS user profiles is superior to using a customDB to store user profile data ?

Any opinions?
Please also send me any documentation regarding userprofile architecture in MOSS or SPS 2003.
