Does MOSS request SQL reporting services for anything? (Specifically,
the standard edition of MOSS, not the enterprise one.)

You can integrate SQL reporting services so that it works with MOSS, but its not
required for any edition of SharePoint.

You should also consider working with Reporting Services 2008. Quite a
bit has improved, and I think the integration was a lot easier.
