MOSS License Queries

Asked By: Brandon    Date: Nov 20    Category: MOSS    Views: 826

Current we are having MOSS enterprise version and we have create
internet/intranet site, which is accessed by the employees (100 Users
approx). This portal also having form library. We are having
following 4 servers as mentioend below, all are 64 bit servers.

1. Front End Serve 1
2. Front End Server 2 (Load Balance Server)
3. Application/Search Server
4. Databse Server

We are having 2 different scenerio

Scenerio 1 - Current Portal
These is an internet/intranet site, which is access by company
employees from various world wide location. CUrrently there ar 100
users. We are expecting more 500+ users in next user. We are using
ADAM - FBA Authentication.
Do we need to buy more CAL, if yes then why we need to buy as we are
using ADAM authentication?
Do we need to buy License or CAL for infopath form library, can we
not go with infopath form services?

Scenerio 2 - MySite Portal
We are also in process for creating an extranet site for external
user (non-employee). It is basically mysite for each user. We are
expecting by the 1000+ by the end of 2009. As I know we need to buy
MOSS Internet Facing LIcense, do we need to buy CAL for this also?

On this portal we are not going to use any type of infopath form
library.

Please advise MOSS server license in detail?

You will need to get a quote from a Microsoft salesperson to be sure that you
are covered, but here is the answer I expect you will hear.

1) All 4 servers will need a Standard and Enterprise Server license  for
SharePoint Server.

2) All employee users (whether they are authenticated via ADAM or not) will
need SharePoint Standard and Enterprise CALs. Licensing is not determined by
authentication mechanism. It is determined by usage.

3) Since you have Enterprise Edition you will only need InfoPath CALs for
the people who develop forms. Users who fill them out using web pages are
covered by the Enterprise CAL.

4) External users (non-employees) are not covered by CALs, so you will need
the Internet connection license for them. However, there used to be a
prohibition against using the Internet connection license and regular
Enterprise/Server licenses together on a single server. You may have to put
your Extranet on dedicated servers.

That's the way the licensing reads, but there is a lot of room for
interpretation so you will need to get a written quote from a Microsoft
licensing professional. That's the only way to guarantee that you are covered.

I have more queries  as mentiond below

1. As I understand enterprise  version including all the services like infopath,
bdc, search and excel services, Only we need to buy enterprise CAL, if we added
more users

2. Can you elaborate more licensing on MOSSFIS on same issue. as you I mentioned
earlier and you replier earlier.

See inline below.

1. As I understand enterprise  version including all the services like infopath,
bdc, search and excel services, Only we need to buy enterprise CAL, if we added
more users

It is true that the Enterprise version  includes all the services, but the
Enterprise and Standard licenses are additive, not independent. So to run the
Enterprise version you need an Enterprise server license, which should include
the Standard license  and Standard and Enterprise CALs for all users. You can
buy the Server license with a specific number of user CALs included. This
covers that number of users. If you have or add more users then you need to buy
additional Standard and Enterprise CALs. Again, to run Enterprise you need both
the Enterprise and Standard CAL for each user.

2. Can you elaborate more licensing on MOSSFIS on same issue. as you I mentioned
earlier and you replier earlier.

I'm not sure what you are asking for here. The MOSS internet connector license
always covers an unlimited number of users, but the users MUST be external
users, not employees.

...and to clarify - the Internet license  is the
MOSS Internet Edition license NOT moss  for Internet Search. The latter
has been replaced by Search Server 2008.
