MOSS Incoming Email

Asked By: Charmaine    Date: Oct 01    Category: MOSS    Views: 914

We want to allow incoming email settings in MOSS 2007. We have
everything working properly when automated, however, want to control
when/where email settings are enabled. If I turn off the "Use the
SharePoint Directory Management Service settings..." and create the
contacts manually upon request, give the users the correct email
address--will that be enough?

I want to create the contacts manually, then give the user the correct
names. I am looking at the implications of turning off the SharePoint
Directory Management Service to help accomplish this. With it off, I am
anticipating that MOSS will not be able to create the contact objects in
the OU, users will have to come to us for the correct contact objects to
fill-in on the list's email settings. Is this possible?

Sounds like you've mostly got it figured out. If you don't want
automatic creation of objects in AD, turn off the DMS. If you go that
route users won't necessary have to wait for you to add the objects.
The lists or libraries will have legit addresses, they'll just be in the
form of list@... instead of list@.... As long as
you have an MX record for wss.example.com in your internal DNS they can
use that address immediately. All the DMS does is give them friendly
names.

You can turn off DMS and manually create the contacts. This strategy
should work fine. The address will be mossitem@.... IIS/SMTP
is simply looking the smtp drop folder for a match. When found,
owstimer.exe routes via the config.
