MOSS Enterprise

Asked By: Vanraj    Date: Jun 14    Category: MOSS    Views: 841

I know that the enterprise edition has business intelligence and allows us to
connect to other Line of Business (LOB) applications and Business Data Catalogs.
What does this really mean? Is there any documentation that talks about this? Is
there anything out of the box that will allow me to connect and pull data from
various data sources or does it require custom coding?

Is anything in the standard edition that will allow me to do it also or do I
need the enterprise edition?

The BDC is the method for connecting to the other LOB apps. The basic
process is that the LOB app needs to either use a support DB (recent SQL
Server or Oracle) or expose a Web Service interface. You then create a
BDC "application" which is essentially an XML file that maps the DB/web
service interface from the LOB into "entities" in MOSS. See
msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms546541.aspx for general info.
There are a couple of tools available to help generating the XML - one
ships in the latest version of the MOSS SDK, another popular one is a
3rd party app called "BDC Metaman".

There is lots of information about this in the SharePoint area of the
Microsoft Site. I would also search on Business Data Catalog on Google
to find many postings done by bloggers around the community.

Microsoft offers a Business Data Catalog Definition Editor utility as
part of its SharePoint 2007 SDK here:
1ac-b2d6-0074d6286fa9&displaylang=en. This will allow you to build BDC
definition files without having to do custom  coding.

Also there is a 3rd party product called BDC MetaMan that will allow to
do this as well, though it costs money. (I also believe it can connect
to more LOB applications  than the Microsoft version)
