MOSS Custom View Style

Working with MOSS 2007, creating a custom view style.
In the past, I've added to the vwstyles.xml file
(after backing up the original copy, of course).

Is this the only way? I don't like hacking files in
the templates directory. Is this something that can
be deployed as a Feature?
