If site variations used to implement bilingualism, how variations will

This would normally be done by implementing a custom approval workflow on
the document  libraries and lists involved. There is no automated
translation facility, but you could add a translation step to an approval
workflow. So as an item is being approved for one document library  it is
automatically forwarded to a translator who will duplicate it in the correct
languages for the variant site.

If I understand your question correctly, it doesn't. Variation
hierarchies are totally independent.

What about default Meta data of document  libraries and lists?

Variations simply allows for the creation of separate parallel branches of a
Site. None of the metadata  will be automatically transferred between.

Metadata contained in the DIP that is the same as columns in the
document library  will travel with the document  as in other cases of
documents being transferred or copied from one document library to
another. This metadata  will be promoted to corresponding columns of
receiving document library if they exist and match the document metadata
in the DIP.
