MOSS 2007 Search Error Message: "Error in the Site Data Web Service"

Has anyone ever run into the following entry in their search error logs:

"Error in the Site Data Web Service"

For me, this seems to happen mostly with PDF documents - the iFilter
is properly installed and I can search for PDF documents that are
OCR-enabled. There is one entry, though, that gives far more detail:

Error in the Site Data Web Service. (*** Client found response content
type of 'text/html; charset=utf-8', but expected 'text/xml'. The
request failed with the error message: -- <html><head><META
HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html;
charset=utf-8"></head><body>An unexpected error has occurred.</body>
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript"> var gearPage =
document.getElementById('GearPage'); if(null != gearPage) {
gearPage.par)

Any ideas?
