Modifying the templates supplied by Microsoft

Does anyone know of a supported/best practices method of editing the templates supplied by Microsoft a few months back so I can add them globally in the form (and function) that I want? The templates use InfoPath and some of them (the one’s I want to use) do not work correctly.

Make your edits and save out as a new template. I don’t think there will be a best practice method  as editing  and resaving is the only option for updating a template file.
