Modify the Private View of My Site

I am having difficulty trying to modify the My Site Private Side in
the same manner that I have modified STS sites. I have figured out
that there are two templates SPSPERS and SPSMSITE, but can't figure
out how to get access to the NavBars and attach custom web parts. Can
someone provide further direction.
