Mixed Mode Only?

I'm finding conflicting answers on this ... do WSS and SPS need to be installed with SQL in mixed mode? Whenever I try to do Windows only I get network security errors like "Logon failed for user NETWORK SERVICE" and that both sa and the domain admin is "not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection". Can anyone please clue me in?

Install SQL in Windows Authentication mode  only.

Ensure that the SQL Service account is a member of the built-in local admins group on the server  which will host SPS.
