Migrating from a test server to a production server

Asked By: Jordon    Date: Jan 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 6049

I have been building share point in a test environment, now I need to move
it to another box for production. I have not found an easy way to do this.
Can be this done without having to rebuild customizations?

I believe that using the msmdback utility should bring almost all of
your customizations  over......what customizatoins are you referring too?

I would suggest trying the msdmback /r form a backup of the test  server.
It has been my experience most everything (read everything in my case)
came over fine.....All fo our customizations  including custome ASP code
in the web page cam over fine as I recall.

I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong!

The requirement on the new server  is just to have SPS and SPS SP 1 installed?
Then the restore from the backup file should be successful?

Everything will come over when you restore but it will overwrite you
entire production server  WSS database. So this could not be a feasible
solution long term to bring over.

One alternative is to use export/import function from the resource kit
but I have been very unlucky using it.

Any other suggestion on how to export/import workspace and content from
one sharepoint server to an other ?

We recommend writing a custom script for situations where, in effect,
you're doing a content merge into an existing SPS workspace.

some minor look and feel sort of things - I can move the gifs and altered
stylesheets over manually. What I am most concerned about is the
categories, document folders and web parts.

I tried to do the reverse.. Use msdmback /r to move everything from what is
to be our production server  to a test  server. Everything seemed to restore
normally, but using the test site is excrutiatingly slow. Is there
something else, possible a rebuild, that should be done after the restore?
