Migrating Sharepoint workspace

Asked By: Abhishek Bapat         Date: Oct 28, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 228

As I had gone through the archives, I know the migration of Sharepoint
workspace is possible. But I just want to few more details.

1. Can I migrate only one workspace to another server where I already
have sharepoint installed & has a workspace in it ?.

2. When I migrate, does Sharepoint migrates the database(s) too ?. And
in that case, will the db at the destination end, be overwritten ?.

For individual workspaces you can use the spsimex utility and you have a
choice of overwriting the schema and content or just the content. You can
create a workspace  on the new machine with the same name or the utility will
do it for you when you run it. The database will not be moved unless you do
a full backup on one machine and restore it to another. Reading articles on
this discussion group there seems to be varying degrees of success when this
has been tried. There are various explanations of a full back-up and
restoring to another server  in the resource kit. Also depending what back-up
software you use you can restore to another server with that. Veritas can
only do the whole sps installation but Commvault www.commvault.com
and NSE www.nse.com claim
to have more granularity maybe worth a look.
