Migrating collaborative sites to WSS 3

I thought I had read that an "easier" way of migrating collaborative sites
(particularly Team Sites) to WSS 3 was something along the lines of backup the
site, (somehow) restore it into a WSS 3 site and then re-apply the theme.

Unfortunately, I can't find the original details that explained this. Does
anyone have any detail they can share, or any experience of having done
something like this?

If you are talking about a wss  2,0 site  to 3.0 that wont work. The
three main migration methods are gradual (side by side install),
upgrade (bad idea on a production server) or moving the data. Moving
the data can be by a tool to help keep the metadata intact.
