Can you migrate a Portal from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005?

Asked By: Stephanie    Date: Jun 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 674

Has anyone tried to migrate a portal from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005?

I've been able to migrate WSS sites over to SQL 2005 and then create
the SPS Content database, but I can't figure out how to restore the
portal databases from the SQL 2000 server?

If I use the Backup/Restore Utility, as soon as I select the manifest
file it gives me an error saying the backup is from an different
version.

If I add the old config database and portal db files directly using
SQL then connect using the web restore version I get an .NET "object
reference not set" error.

I've done it by Backup Exec to restore the SITE, SERV, and PROF databases from 2000 to 2005 and then recreate the Portal. Trying to move the config db will always result in an error but moving the content db's and restoring the portal  should work for you. Never tried with the OOTB backup and restore tool, but if it's comparing version numbers, just use SQL tools to move the 3 db's and you should be fine.
