Migrate Content from MOSS 2007 to WSS 3.0

To reduce costs, we are moving our SharePoint sites from MOSS 2007 to WSS 3.0.
Because Microsoft offers no downgrade tools, we need some guidance on migrating
the sites. Everything must go:
- look & feel, navigation
- groups, users & permissions
- resources (content types, columns, templates, lists, etc)
- alerts, preferences
- library/folder security/access configurations
- content structure (libraries, folders, etc)
- content (ojbects & metadata)

We don't expect to find a tool that will just do the downgrade for us, but are
hoping to unearth a few utilities or tricks (or even procedures) to migrate
everything in some sort of batch-like fashion.

I haven't tried this, but I've seen at least one BLOG post that lists out
all the MOSS specific features suggesting that after turning those off you
could do a standard Backup/Restore using STSADM. Since MOSS is really just
WSS with a lot of extra features and functionality I could conceive of this
working. It might at least be worth testing. Here's the link:

I believe you are going to migrate to a different server
altogether. In that case, here are a few pointers.

1. If you have created any sites based on the templates that MOSS
offers(like Publishing, Collaboration), then it is difficult.
2. Any MOSS related functionality like User Profile, would cause problems.
3. Otherwise, you can use STSADM backup of the site / site collection and
restore it to your new environment with just WSS 3.0

Downgrading from MOSS to WSS is almost impossible and it is not supported by
Microsoft.
The blog that Paul pointed out will help, but you are going to need to build a
new server for the migration. You can't just go from MOSS 2007 to WSS on the
same box, without unistalling and such.

OK, so a new server we have, and now some guidelines.we'll see if we can get this to work.
