Microsoft office 2003 documents ask for reauthentication when launch

We have Office 2003 on all the end users machines. When ever users access a Microsoft Word 2003 or Excel 2003 from a document library inside a WSS site, they are prompted user name and password again. This happens for all the documents, in all the document libraries (both portal and WSS) they access.

The portal is on defualt web site in IIS. I made sure that the default web site has only Integrated windows authentication turned on and not Basic. (followed all the steps in this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871155/en-us)
Inspite of making the web site Integrated Windows Authentication, the users are prompted.

are you going through a proxy server?

No. we dont have proxy server........

Are they able to enter their credentials and view the documents? Are the
security settings for the Intranet zone set to log on automatically ?

In IE5+ there is a client-side setting that will dynamically provide
their integrated credentials. Look in Tools > Internet Options > Local
Intranet (or zone the sites are in - hopefully Trusted) > Custom Level >
User Authentication section (near the bottom) > choose the preferred
Automatic Logon option.

Make sure that the site is trusted in Internet Explorer and that the trusted
group can automatically send ntlm passwords. (The Intranet group is fine too,
just if you're having this issue it's unlikely that it is in the Intranet
