Metadata on sites?

Asked By: Mariah    Date: Aug 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 736

I'm fairly new to sharepoint. I understand that one can attach
metadata to "things" in sharepoint by creating custom site columns and
content types.

Is it possible to attach metadata to other objects like sites and lists
(not things in the list)?

My gut is "no", but it seems like sites do have some metadata
associated with them. For instance, when provisioning a new site,
there's the "Site Categories" section of the "Create Site" form. This
is metadata right? Is it associated with the site or just the Site
Directory list?

How would I add extra metadata to this?

I was asked, "Can't we tell what type of site we've created (e.g.
Division, Department, etc.) by attaching metadata to it?"

Most object in WSS can be extended with custom  properties, but it
requires code to set and retrieve those properties. Objects cannot be
extended the way I think you are asking via the browser or SPD. That
said, why type  of site  was provisioned (Team Site, Meeting Workspace,
etc.) is housed in a WSS attribute for every site.

What about the SiteDirectory? It allows you to add  new categories. I
would consider this metadata, but is this really only useful in the
Site Directory? Can it be used in Search?

The one drawback I see to this is that now whenever you create  a site
you'll have this huge list of categories  that may or may not be
appropriate for every site.

I think of "content type" as meta-data for a list. It seems to work that way
too in the context of queries, workflows, other?

Here's a good writeup of a sharepoint  intranet that heavily leverages metadata.

It was awarded as one of the 10 best-designed intranets for 2008 by
Jakob Nielson.
