Master Pages in MOSS 2007

Asked By: Aurelio Head         Date: Jun 04, 2006      Category: MOSS      Views: 249

Has anyone had experience moving a master page they modified with
SharePoint Designer to a production server? Or is it better practice
to just modify the file with another tool that doesn't un-ghost the
file.

Yes... I think the best process for this is to use provision the file into
different environments using file provisioning in features & solutions. I did a
write up on the arguments for this method on my blog:

This technique will keep your pages  uncustomized (ghosted) as long as you don't
open them in SharePoint Designer and make changes once they've been provisioned.
