Master Page inheritance

Asked By: Nilay    Date: Jun 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 4039

Is there any way to make custom master pages inherit down through the
portal? I have tried changing the settings in the Master Page tab in
site settings, and cannot get them to cascade down through the portal.
I know that if I create a new site that has a publishing template, the
custom master page shows up in the new site, but my portal already
contains several subsites created from a blank site template and I
cannot get the newly customized page to cascade down.
Is there any way this can be done without re-creating all of the
subsites previously created?

In WSS, nothing out of the box allows you to switch master  Pages.
However, the master page  that a Web uses is typically controlled by a
property of each Web called MasterUrl. You can set this property
programmatically. While I can't speak for the code, a friend of mine
(Renaud Comte, aka Stramit) took what I taught in Barcelona last year
and created  this example on CodePlex:

If you go into the master  Page link under SiteSettings of the Publishing
Site at the top level of your site  collection you should see to
checkboxes labeled something like "Reset all subsites  to inherit  the
master page  from this site." There is one for the System Master and one
for the Site Master. Setting those two checkboxes will re-establish the
publishing inheritance  of masterpages for all subsites. Of course this
will only work if the blank  sites that you mentioned are subsites
somewhere lower in the hierarchy than the publishing  site. If they are
peers or above the publishing site then there is no way to inherit the
