Master Page: (File not found error on SharePoint Portal)

Asked By: Keon    Date: Nov 28    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 4137

I have been in the process of customizing Master Page. I renamed the master
page file in order to have a backup, when I was doing this, I got a message
if you want to update attached files and I hit cancel.

Now, whenever I go to my portal I get File not found error. I tried to
restore the page with earlier versions in SPD and I also tried to setup
other page as Default Master Page.

I am not sure if it is a good idea to go through the UI and re-set Master
Page?

I have experienced this same problem. What is happening, when you edit the
Default.Master page  and save the changes that page is no longer a ghosted
page. It has become unghosted, so it only exists in the team site that you
did the editing in. If you go through SharePoint Developer and reset the
master page to it's original everything will work again. If you want the
changes made for all of the sites, you will need to upload that master  page
to all of the sites. There is another programmatically way to make the
changes, which you can find in Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
3.0 by Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson.
