Making a Sharepoint Field Unique

Asked By: Sanchay    Date: Aug 21    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2031

Is there any way to create a column in any sharepoint list that accepts
unique values only. For instance, if I have a column/filed by the
name "Employee No.", and if I enter EmployeeNo = 3 and save the record,
the list should not allow anyone to re-enter a record with employee no
3, as the record for that employee no. already exits.

What say guys? Like these small but interesting challenges in

In WSS v3 you can create  a custom field  type to accomplish what you are trying to do. This will be very challenging in WSS v2.

I am using WSS v2 only and would really like to achieve this. Please guide.

I don't have any secret sauce here. Everything will need to be done
entirely from the client-side. You will either need to query the list
using FrontPage RPCs OR asynchronously call you own Web Service to pull
back values  that have already been used (or maybe the biggest value
used) and then prevent users from choosing those values. I would
probably default the value to the next available number and then change
the textbox to read only.

Why can't you use the ID field?

actually I wanted to create  an alphanumeric field  that should have unique  values. This is the reason why I can't use the ID field.

Check out this video, you can add to it in the code side when uploading by adding Text characters (say EMP + ID) to the unique numbers to get an alpha numeric value(EMP161248)
