Lost SPS/MOSS Search Capabilites

Asked By: Paul    Date: Oct 05    Category: MOSS    Views: 817

My users have been able to do searching on the SPS/MOSS sites. Then
one day it stopped. I am having trouble getting the search working
again on the entire site. I have gone to the Administration site and I
still cannot find where or how to get it working again.

is this a stand-alone
or do you have a seperate search/index server? Have you gone into
operations and made sure that the service is running on the box? You
can always use the stsadmn tool on the search  server and use the
following syntax:

stsadm -o spsearch -action start

-farmserviceaccount <domain\name> (service credentials)

[-farmservicepassword] <password>

We are rolling out Hotfix 941422 in about 10 minutes as we had the same
problem and exhausted all alternatives.

Just out of curiostiy, have you migrated any users  from one domain to
another recently?

Depending on whether this is MOSS 2007 or SPS 2003 the answer is
slightly different, but the search  settings are typically in Shared
Services which can be access from Central Administration. Typical
reasons for things to stop working:

1) Permissions changes (e.g. the crawl account no longer has access to
the content, so the index is empty)

2) Password changes (e.g. the password changed for one or more of the
service accounts and were not properly updated)
