Lost connection to SQL shortly and not rerendering pages until WFE

Last night our 2003 portal went down again. Been going down a few times
in the last month which is not good. Looked through the logs and there
are several errors but the typical scenario involves losing connection
to SQL (very shortly) and then not rendering pages until rebooting the
WFEs (maybe IIS reset would work?). I saw some NLB notices, some index
server logon failures, antivirus scanner messages, a few .NET errors
regarding SPSDevAreaMenu? and an AppPool error shutting down. Has
anyone any course of action with these kind of log errors or advice?
