Looking for consistant TreeView

Asked By: Shasta    Date: Aug 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1004

By default, the SharePoint TreeView has what I consider to be an odd
behavior: A lack of consistancy across my entire site.

The Treeview at my root site collection works great, it shows all of
the children site collections.

However, once I navigate in to one of the child site collections, the
TreeView no longer shows my Root level or sibling site collections.
Rather, it treats the current site collection as the new "root" and
only displays it's children.

So, my question:

Is there any way to use the TreeView to display the navigation of the
top root site collection, no matter which child site collection I am in?

I just want a consistant navigation menu, but I want to use the
TreeView functionality specifically (expanding and collapsing nodes
using the plusses), not the QuickMenu.

Any help would be most appreciated. Instant messages welcome.

That is all based on the SiteMapDataSource and SiteMapProvider that it
is bound to. The Top navigation  bar is bound to the Global provider,
which always shows  from the root. The QuickLaunch bar is bound to the
current provider which shows based on where you are. The behavior you
describe is by design. To change it you need to edit the masterpage to
bind the Quicklaunch bar to the other datasource. Take a look at this

We had a similar issue in our sharepoint  implementation too.

We replaced the quick launch with Global Nav and used flyouts of Global Nav to
get a constant menu, what ever the current  sharepoint site  is.

Let me know if you want more details.

I would be interested in learning more about your Global Nav solution, if
you don't mind sharing.
