I use the Sharepoint utility, MSDMBack.vbs, to get a full backup  of all
the Sharepoint data. You can also use MSDMBack.vbs for restores as well.
It's fairly well documented in the Sharepoint Resource kit and on
Microsoft Technet.

Once I've completed the backup, I use the Microsoft Backup Utilities to
archive the backup file to tape that MSDMBack.vbs creates.

At present we are using MSDMBack utility and it is working fine.but
there is no way to restore  folder wise.if I want to restore only one
folder I have to restore whole workspace in another server  and copy
particular folder to the live server.for file restoration I am using
undelete tool.

The scenario that I have setup in my environment is that I have a spare
server. I use the msdmback utility to create my backup  file. If I happen
to lose a folder or document, I run a restore  of the backup file to the
spare server  and then I connect using web folder to grab the folder that
I need into my live site. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Also, there is a tool by NSE that will allow you to restore just the
folders.

I initially found Doc Ave1.0 from AvePoint on the forum, see the link:

and we had tested 3 of them. in general, Doc Ave 1.0 is stable and
useful because I was told they used new APIs. Then it supports CROSS
backup (backup on A and restore  on B)

Did you find out that commVt and varits changed the version # for
history and they told me this is not a bug, WHy? and AvePoint works
well. So I think because of APIs.

We bought from AvePoint, now upgraded 1.5 for 2 SPS in our company.

Veritas also has an Agent for Sharepoint Portal servers that appears to
offer similar functionality.

Veriras is not supposed to handle individual files/workspaces, just
whole servers. I've played around with Avepoint. It appears to work
fine, but I declined to pursue it do to perhaps the worst interface
I've ever dealt with. The company touts it as a plus, but it's
obtuse and has a discordant workflow to it. IMHO, as one who has
designed UI's that got praised by Industry Analysts, this one is a
train-wreck.

More words about backup  tool based on what I know. Farguat is right,
Veritas does not handle the individual files and workspaces, it's
pretty much like KVS for Exchange backup. SP manager is OK just used
WEbDev which has some limits and runs slowly.

Well, I still voted for AvePoint, I don't work for it but I got good
hands from them when I was browsing around for backup tool. It has
some good  features in comparison to others.

One more thing about UI, I totally disagree that's bad design. In
deed, that is very good to me and my co-workers especially it has
context sensitive help. You may take a look at Galaxy and SP's GU.

Anyway, just a little tips, may be right and may be wrong.

Veritas 9.0 sharepoint  agent "supposedly" supports workspaces etc. I've got
an issue outstanding with them at the mo. It seems with a redirect to
another server  the software doesn't seem to work. It complains about being
unable to restore  the categories. Veritas said they recreated this problem
in the lab and suggested I create the categories first before I do the
restore!!! I pointed out I may have up to 500 categories to recreate so they
said they would look into it. I would be interested if anyone else has
tested this software and if they had any problems. I've got commvault coming
in Monday to do a days testing with their product I'll let you know how it
goes.

because of this problem i am not able to move to second phase of our
