Load Balancing

Asked By: Colt    Date: Aug 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5616

Our current SPS farm configuration is one web server (for web, index
and search) and a backend SQL server. We would like now to load
balance the front end. Is it true that we will have have to wipe out
the whole thing and start again because of the need to do the load
balancing the front end? I hope this not the case.

Nope - no need to wipe it all out and start  over. You should be able to
add two Web servers to your farm  (leaving Indexing/Job where it is) and
then NLB the two servers to create a nigh-availbility set of server  on
the front  end.

Does this help?

This helps as I see it as another solution. What if you
get only one server  and then NLB with the existing one? Is this
possible? without restarting all over again?

Bill, it sounds like this person wants to simply add a single new WFE to the farm  and use NLB to load  balance between the old WFE and the new WFE.

I don't think there should be any problems.

you can’t have two WFE servers without also having a dedicated Index/Job server. He’s running all four farm  roles on one server. To add another web  server requires that you add a third server  to do this Indexing/Job roles. Since these roles are the hardest to move, I’ve suggested creating two new web/search servers and NLBing them.

You're right on the money........

You can't have two web/search servers in a farm  without also having the
Index/Job roles dedicated on a third server. Now, you can have two
servers in a medium farm, but one of them *must* be dedicated to the
Index/Job function. In order to have two servers in your farm running
the web/search roles, you must have a third server  running the Index/Job

why can't you have all four components on the two NLBing WFE?

Because the product is hard-coded to not work that way. The Farm
definitions or configurations are Exact. You most stay within the
config's allowed by Microsoft or face a farm  that isn't fully
