.lnk blocked file type - security risk?

Asked By: Tyler Collins         Date: Jan 02, 2004      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 567

In SPS2003/WSS one of the default blocked file types is .lnk. Do any of the list members have an opinion on how much of a security risk these file types pose? We have a user requesting we drop this from the list so hyperlinks can be stored in document libraries (as opposed to link lists).

IMHO, never view the blocked  file types  as a security  measure. It is
rather simple to rename an exe with a doc extension, then upload it,
then rename it back to an exe extension and viola - you've just bypassed the blocked file  types rule.
