List templates: Moving between site types

Asked By: Phillip    Date: Apr 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 979

I have spent all morning trying to instantiate a customized list (a
calendar with multiple views & customized fields) on a WSS site.

I customized the list on the homepage of my SPS portal. Then I saved
as a .stp file.

When I navigated to the WSS site I created to share this, I was able
to upload the template no problem; It now shows in my "List Template
Gallery." However, it does not appear in my "Create" screen in the
custom lists section as it should.

I have done a lot of searches on this.

Here is MS:
Here is a workaround for going the other way (WSS to SPS)

So I understand that the site must be of the same type in order to
move them across. That seems utterly strange. I tried the URL
workaround described in the second link above and I was able to get
my "CompanyEvents" web part to show on the "Create" screen; thought I
had succeeded but when trying to instantiate I get an error about an
invalid reference.

Is this just a rant about a well-known and irritating limitation or
can someone please explain how I might recreate the calendar in
another site type. (Also, is "Area" a site type or are the SPS areas
a different type?)
