New to list, and a feasibility question

I've been on the Exchange lists for quite some time now and just
realized there was a list specifically for Sharepoint. We are a software
development company. We have a system that we currently use which has
really begun to age and needs to be replaced. The current web-based
solution (IIS 4, SQL) provides us with an intranet/extranet solution for our
customers and developers to work together on projects. We do our bug/issue
tracking, document management, status reports, change management, etc. via
this system, as well as provide links to development and staging/testing
sites. This solution has worked well for years but has had major growing
pains and is difficult to manage.

I would like to replace this solution with something that is cleaner and
easier to manage. I considered Exchange, which seemed quite simple to do,
but would require mailboxes for all of the users. Since this system will
have hundreds of external users I don't think that is the direction I would
like to go. Obviously, developer time is a premium in our current economy
so I need something that doesn't require months to develop.

Is this a feasible application to build on the WSS in Sharepoint and
integrate with Sharepoint functionality? Is there sample code somewhere
that could help me out on this? Does anyone have any better products that
would have more functionality out of the box?
