Linking tasks and documents in MOSS 2007

Asked By: Keaton    Date: May 07    Category: MOSS    Views: 1780

We're investigating possible solutions to a problem we've been having
linking documents to tasks in the beta version of SharePoint 2007. As
far as I can see, there are two ways to go about this, with pros and
cons for each:

Attach the Document to the Task
Pros: Directly links the document to the task, doesn't require
uploading the document to a library before creating the task
Cons: No document versioning, no check-out (increased possibility of
competing edits). The document is not available to share with other
parts of the site when attached to a task -- you'd have to save it to
a hard drive and re-upload it to a doc library for that to be

Use the "Lookup" feature to link to documents from a pre-selected
Document Library

Pros: In a Library, check-out and version control is possible and
the document can be made available to other areas on the site (other
libraries, etc.)
Cons: Documents must be uploaded to the library before the task is
created, limited information available to identify documents when
user is trying to select them via the Task, high volume of tasks
means that the number of documents in the library could get very high
(more difficult to find documents), and -- most importantly -- the
client did NOT like the default document selection interface that
using this method created.

We'd love to find a way to combine the best features of the two
options above. Ideally, the solution would allow the person creating
the task to upload documents (from the "edit" view of the task) to a
document library and "attach" them to the task all at the same time.

Can anyone help out with a solution or some suggestions for how to
approach this? Custom coding or third party web parts are fine with
me, as long as it gets us what we want!

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I haven't had any luck researching
this on my own...
