Linking existing WSS sites to SPS

Asked By: Tucker Ashley         Date: Jul 05, 2005      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 181

I have an old portal that is going away and a new one that will take its place and I don’t want to restore any of the old data to the new portal. To minimize the amount of content migration that I need to do at once what I want to do is somehow link the old WSS to the new SPS. I thought this could be done but I just can’t find where. I want the old content available but I don’t want its mucked up database touching my new system. Can I do this?

Would I just unhook the existing  WSS server from the existing SPS configuration database  then hook it back up to the new server?

You can associate a WSS site with a portal. It would be in a separate database
from the portal.
If you just wanted a link  to the old site, create it in the topology whereever
you want.
If you just want it to show up in searches, add it as a content  source.

We have our portal  deployed to the extranet and I was hoping I could
have it managed by the primary portal and not do a hand off.

Could I create a second virtual server on my new SPS server then extend WSS to
it and restore  just the WSS sites  from the old SPS server and add that new
virtual server to the new portal  as a managed path? Would that get everything
under one URL and keep it in two content  databases?
