How can I add a link to the GlobalSiteLink control?

Asked By: Helen    Date: Jul 15    Category: MOSS    Views: 5604

Is there a way to add a link to the GlobalSiteLink control located at
the top right of SharePoint pages? (MOSS2007/WSS 3.0)

I would like to either change the link for the blue help icon, or add
another link such as "Contact Us".

Sure, use a Control Feature to create your own GlobalSiteLink.

Use a CustomAction Feature to add  another link.

The CustomAction Feature sounds perfect, do you know what
Location/GroupId I'd need to specify?

the Welcome menu is actually constructed using the
..\12\TEMPLATE\CONTROLTEMPLATES\Welcome.ascx file. So, you get away with
using PersonalActions but I haven't tried that yet. Do let us know what
you find out.

Okay, this is what I found out so far.

A feature with the following custom action element will add  a "MY
CUSTOM LINK" option to the Welcome drop down:

<UrlAction Url="feedbacklink"/>

I'd rather have a link  beside the Welcome message instead of inside
it, but it's a start...

I just can't help  myself.

There is a way to do that. If I recall correctly, the default.master
Master Page establishes three GlobalSiteLinkx Control PlaceHolders (see
the attached image). You can override any of these using a Control
Feature. There is something about the Global nature of these (perhaps
they are scoped for every Web on the Farm - I can't remember but I talk
about this in the Feature chapter of my book).

I'm re-reading that chapter in your book now. I have one question though;
I have the enterprise edition installed and there are a LOT of features
installed - which I found by installing Patrick Tissenghem's tool found
www.u2u.info/.../Post.aspx?ID=1631 . Is there a
description of each feature listed somewhere? Some are apparent, but a lot
of them are not.

I don't think there is a comprehensive list of Features installed with the
different versions. Sounds like it might be an interesting project though.

you can add  a normal html link  in master page of the site. So that get
inherited all the pages.

Just open the site in SharePoint Designer and you will see a table which is
holding all GlobalSiteLink control. There add your own links.

I was hoping to use a Feature (or something along those lines)
instead of SharePoint Designer.

I'd rather not customize a master page just for this one link.
