I have had a couple of instances where some of our users are getting an
error message when trying to edit a word document that is stored in
SharePoint. They are using word 2003 and the path is over 400 characters
long (many folders deep), but there is an inconsistency in that we have
other documents stored in SharePoint that are also have a path of over
400 characters and work fine. We also tried to edit the document from
Explorer view and it worked ok. We also moved the document to the top
level of the path and we were also able to edit it.
The error message we are getting is:
"The document could not be opened for editing. A Windows SharePoint
Services compatible application could not be found to edit the
document."
Does anyone know of any limitations and why it would work for some and
not others?
