Limit Permission to a document library on WSS 3.0 Team Site

Asked By: Zoe    Date: Apr 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3060

There are several document libraries in the site. I need to limit user
John Doe's access to document library ABC only. Here is what I did:

1. settings->document library settings of ABC->permissions for this
document library->edit permissions to break permission
inheritance->new->add users to add John doe to the library with
contribute permissions. John Doe has no other permissions.

After above is done, John Doe can't go to http://server/sites/team
(the url of the team site), he can only go to
http://server/sites/team/ABC. Is this what I should expect?

Also the site logo is stored in the images folder (you see this folder
if you use SharePoint Designer). However, this logo does not show up,
instead the page shows a broken image. How do I fix this without
moving this image to a document library since I can't modify
permissions on the images folder or its contents?

Last question, what is the best practice to limit permissions on a
site, taking into account administration, maintenance etc.

from a logic standpint, you did it backwards. permission  the site  to all users.
then apply resticted permissions  to all the pieces - lists & libraries. you
definitely want to use security groups, rather than indiviual IDs.

Definitely using security groups is the way to go.

Any taker to my original questions?

To take the question  one step further, if I need to grant John Doe
access to another document  library xyz, do this mean John Doe needs to
remember a new url  such as http://servername/sites/team/xyz?

Granting permissions  to a list (a document  library is a type of list)
does not grant permission  to the rest of the site. What you are
experiencing is normal.

As for the logo, did you copy a customized file to the
12\TEMPLATE\IMAGES folder? If so, it is probably not inheriting
permissions from the containing folder  (NTFS permissions, not SharePoint
permissions). If you did not copy a file, then that is a bit
troublesome. The SharePoint installation/configuration usually sets the
correct permissions...

For the logo, I just drag and dropped an image  file to the images
folder in SharePoint Designer. SPD shows  an images  folder after you
open a team  site in SPD. Then I set the icon in the site  settings to
be /servername/sites/team/images/icon.gif. So no I did not copy a
customized file to the 12\template\images folder.

I understand the situation you described and I have run into that before.
