Knowledgebase List/Library for MOSS 2007

  Asked By: Sondra    Date: Oct 24    Category: MOSS    Views: 1274

I've just received a request from a group to create a "Knowledge Base"
site. The requirements are striking similar to what you would see
for a Microsoft KB:

Knowledgebase - Outline

Organization
* 2 Knowledgebases, or restricted content -
1. IT Support internal, and
2. User Knowledgebase (I'm open to suggestions for names)
* Outline format (can we have an outline pane along with the
list
view?)
* Additional keyword categorization/organization/sorting
* Thesaurus/Dictionary
Security
* Ability to hide and/or restrict access to articles by group if
needed
Format
* Standard form(s) for submissions and final KB articles
* Standard numbering and naming
* Ability to add screenshots, attach files
* Versioning
Submission
* Create workflow for article review and approval
* Includes ability to post comments/revisions to article
submissions
* Team:
o Assigned SME(s) for each category,
o Approval committee,
o RFC groups
o Administrator
o ?
* Question submission process?
Quality Assurance
* Article review and expiration (set up reminders, highlights,
or
auto-archive after expiration)
* Feedback ("Was this helpful?", comments field)
Searching
* I'm assuming SharePoint search services will do well as long
as
we populate keywords properly
Subscribing
* Ability to subscribe to individual articles

While I know many of the items that are requested here are standard
MOSS features (Thesaurus, alerts, keywords, item security,
publishing, approval workflow, versioning), I'm curious to know if
any of you have set up something similar in MOSS 2007. I've got some
ideas on how to proceed. However, I wanted to reach out to you guys
first to see if this ground has been covered before.

Did you ever find or build a solution for your knowledge base?

I'm currently evaluating the Bamboo KnowledgeBase Accelerator Solution
(www.bamboosolutions.com <http://www.bamboosolutions.com> ), but I'm
trying to find other SharePoint-based KB solutions for comparison on
features/cost.

Our primary requirements include:

1. easy upload/browsing and placement of inline images without having
to exit the article editor (Bamboo has this)

2. ability to secure certain articles only for help desk, leave
others open for all users (not built in to Bamboo product, but I can do
it myself via a filtered view)

3. full text searching through all article content AND any attached
files (Bamboo product currently doesn't do this)

4. wiki-like links (i.e. [[link]]) - Bamboo doesn't do this, as they
are using their own custom list content type
