Joining server farm fails with encryption/decryption exception

I had SharePoint 2007 portal beta 2 installed on latest release of
longhorn. We had some stability issues so I installed Windows 2003,
then reinstalled SharePoint portal. I did not do a backup (kicking
myself now) thinking I could just rejoin the server farm. When I
try to join the server farm I get the error below. Any help greatly
appreciated...

Openning configdb
so that I can join it at server foundation database
SharePoint_Lognhorn_Config in farm mode
INF

Now joining to farm
at server foundation database SharePoint_Lognhorn_Config
ERR

Task configdb has
failed with an unknown exception
ERR

Exception:
System.ArgumentException: Error during encryption or decryption.
