Issue with prompting for web file properties in a document library

I am using WSS 3.0 with Office 2003. I set up a content type based
upon the document content type but with 3 existing site columns that
were not required, enabled content type management within the document
library and created a new document using the content type.

Upon saving, the web file properties screen appeared, but showed no
fields. The document saved and automatically checked in.

Has anyone experienced this or other related oddities using content
types, site columns within them, office 2003? Does anyone have any
work-arounds or resolved this?

When uploading a document, the fields appeared in the web file
properties window as expected.

Office 2003 does not offer full integration with SharePoint 2007, so
some functionality isn't called up, especially when saving from 2003
into a 2007 site. This sounds consistent with Office 2003 standard
behavior.
