Internet Deployment

Asked By: Bob    Date: May 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 665

I am deploying sharepoint on Internet for the first time. No Anonymous Access All users are member of AD. Is there anything that I need to keep in mind before deploying it on Internet? How different it would be from normal deployment on Intranet?

Stuff to keep in mind - first of all, sharepoint  is intended as an
intranet solution, and you will see this behavior many times in many
ways. First off, authentication- users  will be prompted for
credentials whenever they're uploading or downloading files - you
don't get the benefit of integrated windows authentication when
people aren't logged onto machines on the domain and accessing an
intranet site. SSL can be kind of a pain as well. Also, if a user
doesn't have office loaded on the machine you'll lose a lot of

I would say "you'll lose a lot of functionality" is an overstatement.
From memory, things you can't do with SharePoint 2003 using Office XP:

-Export an entire list (offline edit/synchronization)
-Edit in DataSheet
-Upload multiple documents simultaneously
-Outlook alert management (was that in XP or not?)
-Shared Workspace task pane from within Office application
-Create WSS Webs (Workspaces) from Office
-Link Contact and Event lists to Outlook
-Automatically collect metadata when a document is saved
-Simultaneously search across multiple Webs/libraries
-Minor enhancements here and there

I think that most of these can be classified as nice to have rather than
deal killers. What else do you loose?

These were some additional Office XP and Internet issues that we hit:

"Edit in place" for office documents didn't work
Frequent requests for login credentials when moving between SP,
office and document library explorer views
