Intergration of files server and sharepoint

Asked By: Mohammad    Date: Oct 16    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 711

I'm just a newbie with Share Point Portal Server, and i need your help.
in my company, we've got a fileserver (Windows 2000 Server) for sharing
files for all staffs in all departments. now we want to install Share Point
Portal Server (on a separate machine) to manage this fileserver to everyone
( as documents in "Document Library", not as Content Sources, for these
tasks: Check in, Check out, Version Tracking..etc. not only searching as
other content sources)

How can i configure the SPS to use our files server as external storage ?

BTW: in default installation, any one know where SPS stores documents ?

You can't do this. You have to know that SPPS works with Web Storage System as
his native file system. The only think that you can do it with your file server
is index al the files  and use the spps searcher to localize it, but you can not
use the enhanced properties Check in / out.....
Probably you can copy all the files from you file server  to the spps server
using the web folders access, take care with the security of the files
