Can we install SharePoint Portal Server on a stand alone system which
is not in network. ............?

I have installed Windows Server 2003 with latest Service Pack, SQL
2000 with SP3A and then installed SharePoint Portal server. Have done
all these on my home PC and is not in the Network. Neither do i have
any idea about how to extend the Virtual Server and how to configure
Farm Server settings.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. I would recommend using SP4
instead of 3a. You wouldn't be able to access it to test anything from
a remote system  but it could still help with training, customization,
etc. There are MANY MANY documents out there available on how to
extend, create, configure and customize. Start out at
www.sharepointblogs.com and, of course, ask questions here. It sounds
like you aren't using MOSS 2007 but sharepoint  2003. If that is the
case, why?
