Install SQL Selections Greyed Out...

Asked By: Ali    Date: Dec 09    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5428

I had Windows SharePoint Services installed using a named
instance of WMSDE and then performed an install of SPS. When
installing SPS however all database selection options were
greyed out. The WMSDE database option was selected and
I was compelled to finish installing SPS which of course
installed a new instance of WMSDE.

I had SQL Server installed on the machine and prefer using it
with SPS but again, during installation of SPS the selection
was greyed out.

Is there any way to modify SPS to use the installed instance
of SQL Server so I could uninstall WMSDE and its other
two named instances? I have no data I am concered about
as this is a fresh install.

I've also had this occur on several occasions. Not sure of the cause but
three things that seem to help:
1) start with a fresh install  of Windows Server 2003 with a formatted drive
(a reinstall in an existing partition seems to contribute to problems.
2) be sure the Server 2003 is a member of a named  domain (join a domain)
before installing  SPS 2003 and static IP has been set.
3) set up a user ID which has both LOCAL and DOMAIN administrative authority
- use this ID as the SPS administrative account.

You can detach from existing databases through the Central Admin page, and
point it to a existing SQL Server. I believe you have to remove all
components from the Configure Server Topology page first, though.
