Cannot install SharePoint 2003

Asked By: Mohammad    Date: Jan 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 952

I have downloaded and tried to install SharePoint Portal Server Beta 2
Technical Refresh but each time the setup process is nearing the end, it gets
stuck and does not complete. At this point, I wait for a long time and nothing
happens, then I have to end the task or reboot. Once I do these SharePoint will
not come up. If I try to repair SharePoint Portal and SharePoint Services the
repair process completes successfully but I still cannot launch into SharePoint
Portal Server. I am trying to install this on Windows 2003 Standard Edition
(not beta or release candidate but licensed copy). Any ideas? Should I install
just Beta 2 first then upgrade to the Technical Refresh? I heard that Beta 2
cannot be installed on the final licensed copy of Windows 2003, is this true?
And the Technical Refresh can be installed on bot the Release Candidate as well
as the final licensed copy of Windows 2003.

Try these steps:
1) install  Windows Server 2003 - a fresh install & format the drive (of
course first, back up anything you need to save)
2) Join the server to a named domain
3) Configure the server with IIS (and do not install Front Page Extensions)
4) DO NOT do anything else to this SPS server yet except perhaps setting the
IP address(es) on your network connections.
5) Apply Windows Update (from the link on the Microsoft Home Page, under
Resources - left navigation panel)
6) Install SPS V2 Tech Refresh :: (choices)
6a) Install without MSDE - assumes you have SQL Server 2000 with service
pack 3a installed on a different server
6b) Install with MSDE
6c) do not install the optional components (backward compatible document

Lots of next steps -- but if SPS installs, you'll be presented with pages to
set up (create) a Portal Site.

I have followed the exact same steps that you listed below. The
only thing that is different is that I have Symantec AntiVirus installed. In
fact, when installing SharePoint I disabled real time scanning.

Are you doing this via a PCAnywhere or Remote Desktop session?

Is this by any chance running in a VM session?

How much RAM are you giving it?

512 MB Ram. I am doing the install  from the server itself..not remotely via
Terminal Services, etc.
