Inserting ID value into Infopath form

Asked By: Deon    Date: Sep 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 7565

I have an Infopath form, being saved to a SharePoint Document Library
that needs a unique ID. It seems like the easiest thing to do would be
to insert the ID column value into a field in the form. I've attached
the library to the form as a secondary data source, but nothing I do
is making the ID value appear in the field I've set up to hold it,
either before or after I've saved the form.

Is what I'm trying to do even possible? Any suggestions? Is there
another way I can insert a unique ID into my forms? I have SharePoint
Designer available, so I could create a custom workflow if that's what
it takes.

Are you trying to write to the ID field  or just read from it? The field
"ID" is a reserved name for an existing read-only column  - it won't
exist until the form  is submitted, and you cannot set  it's value. If
you are generating your own ID and writing to a new column (e.g. "MyID")
then you can setup the form field to populate the list column on submit
via settings when you publish the form to SharePoint.

I'm just trying to read the ID field  value, and insert  the value into
the form.

If it doesn't exist until the form  is submitted, can I

a) read the largest current value and add one or
b) add a button to the form that will submit the form data  and fill in
the value?

For (a) no, as that assumes you'll never have more than 1 person
completing the form  at the same time. For (b), maybe, but why go to
that trouble? Is there a particular reason you need to display the ID
in the form?

you can use web service which creates unique  number and use that number

when infopath  form is opened...
