The simplest method I have found is to create a web service.
Infopath does a good job consuming web services.

Here is a good article I found that helped me do my first ones.
There is an example of pulling data and an example of submitting data.
I have even been able to submit data from repeating sections using
this methodology.

If you do not have Visual Studio to create the web service the free
Visual Studio Express Web developer can do it.

here is the url:

Scroll down until you see title Submitting to a Database (via Web
Services)in infopath  Forms Services

There are 2 main ways to do this - direct database write or using the
SQL 2005 Web Services - these 2 links describe the methods in detail:

web-services-with-infopath.aspx
