Indexing PDF files

Asked By: Roland Hammond         Date: Sep 13, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 198

We currently have a scanning department that now uses adobe Acrobat 5 to
create context searchable PDF files.

Unfortunately, Sharepoint (EVAL at the moment) seems incapable of
indexing these files. I have read about an Adobe ifilter4.1 and I have
followed the installation instructions but no joy.

I have also made sure that Sharepoint has PDF files included in its
extension search.

I have now resolved the problem and in actual fact it had nothing to
do with sharepoint  Portal! Rather it was a permissioning issue and
some sub folders as the account used by sharepoint had no access to
the pdf  files in the those folders.

They were Adobe pdf  files, but I have now resolved the problem as it was
a sub folder permissioning problem and I required the installation  of
the Adobe Ifilter to allow full indexing.

sorry that I can`t provide you with a solution but at least I can tell you
that it works here. It is also an EVAL-Edition. Indexing and Search works
well. It scans PDF-Documents for Keywords etc.

I have heard that sometimes the PDF files  store the text as images
rather than text. In this case you will not be able to index the files.

which PDF are you talking about? Adobe Acrobat files, or Microsoft SMS
files? The former are images, the latter are text.
