Indexing large files with numbers in them

we are experiencing an odd behavior with MOSS search indexing. We
have dropped a series of Word documents that contain man multi-page
reports in them. Each of the many reports contain a 9 digit number that
our users want to be able to search on. So that means each file can
contain many of these numbers. The number of reports in a file is

Now to the problem. We are finding that we get varied results when
searching on these numbers. Sometimes they are found, sometimes they
are not. With some simple testing it *appears* that this related to the
size of the file (and therefore the number of reports). Files that
contain less than 500 pages (<1.5Mb and around 250 reports) will always
return a positive match to a search. As the files get larger than that
the results become more and more unreliable.

I have checked the search logs and there doesn't appear to be any
problem encountered in indexing these files, regardless of size. I also

As it turns out though we are patched up the June 2009 Cumulative update
so my assumption is that the fix must have been rolled up in what we
have installed because we are getting results returned on the smaller
