Indexing

Asked By: Haresh    Date: Aug 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 516

Will it be a good idea to have a sps server in Johannesburg and an index
server in Cape Town?
Will searching be faster for the people in Cape Town?

Why would you want to split the index server  for SPS in JHB? If the
content is also in CT, then the index server in CT will make sense, but
the searching  interface and database is in JHB on SPS as far as I know.
So bringing the content sources the index server together makes sense to
me.

I am a little (maybe very) confused.

I would like to have one sps  server in JHB, but people  in Cape Town must
access it as well.
How would I speed up the searching  for users in Cape Town?
Or how would I be able to get the same content in Cape Town?

The question is, do the people  in Cape have access the documents that
are indexed in your JHB server? Allowing them to search is as basicall
simple as allowing JHB people access to the search. IF a search refers
links to documents that are inaccessable to CT people, the excercise is
futile. If they can, then remember that those Docs have to go back via
the link to CT, which could impact that line usage severely if they are
lots of large Word or PDF files. SharePoint is really a lot of stuff
added to IIS indexed in a database for easy reference. So there are no
new concepts, everything works as before and the rules are the same in
terms of performance. It would be a mistake to put down a server  in CT,
ask it to index your files stores on the LAN in JHB, provided you have
access to it from CT, and then let people in CT search locally. The
savings in searching  (unless you have very high search volumes or many
users searching) will be nullified by the traffic generating in indexing
the filestores and getting the files to CT. Mail me privately if you
need to give me more detail and want to discuss it more.
